چکیده

Semi-classical molecular dynamics simulations of small rare gas clusters in short laser pulses of 100nm wavelength were performed. For comparison, the cluster response to 800nm laser pulses was investigated as well. The inner ionization dynamics of the multi-electron atoms inside the cluster was treated explicitly. The simulation results underpin that at XUV wavelengths collisions play an important role in the energy absorption and the generation of the surprisingly high charge states of Xe atoms inside clusters, as they were observed in the free-electron laser experiment at DESY, Hamburg, Germany [Wabnitz et al., Nature 420, 482 (2002)].

Tracing non-equilibrium plasma dynamics on the attosecond timescale in small clusters

It is shown that the energy absorption of a rare-gas cluster from a vacuumultraviolet (VUV) pulse can be traced with time-delayed extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond probe pulses by measuring the kinetic energy of the electrons detached by the probe pulse. By means of this scheme we demonstrate, that for pump pulses as short as one femtosecond, the charging of the cluster proceeds during the f...

Correlated electronic decay in expanding clusters triggered by intense XUV pulses from a Free-Electron-Laser

Irradiation of nanoscale clusters and large molecules with intense laser pulses transforms them into highly-excited non- equilibrium states. The dynamics of intense laser-cluster interaction is encoded in electron kinetic energy spectra, which contain signatures of direct photoelectron emission as well as emission of thermalized nanoplasma electrons. In this work we report on a so far not obser...

Small rare gas clusters in laser fields: ionisation and absorption at long and short laser wavelengths

The interaction of short laser pulses with small rare gas clusters is investigated by using a microscopic, semi-classical model with an explicit treatment of the inner-atomic dynamics. Field and collisional ionisation as well as recombination are incorporated self-consistently so that the use of rates for these processes could be avoided. The laser absorption and ionisation mechanisms in cluste...

Coherent excitation of shake-up states in rare gas atoms by attosecond xuv pulses

In a recent experiment [2], Uiberacker et al. exposed neon atoms to a phase-stabilized fewcycle infrared (IR) laser field and a synchronized attosecond XUV pulse. The XUV pulse leads to single ionization of the Ne atom and the creation of excited (shake-up) states in the residual Ne ion. The IR pulse can then further ionize the Ne ion, thus serving as a probe for the quantum state of the singly...

Small rare-gas clusters in soft x-ray pulses.

We develop a microscopic model for the interaction of small rare-gas clusters with soft x-ray radiation from a free electron laser. It is shown that, while the overall charging of the clusters is rather low, unexpectedly high atomic charge states can arise due to charge imbalances inside the cluster. These findings are explained by an increased absorption via inverse bremsstrahlung due to high ...
